Our History
Scripture Union is an International organisation now present in over 130
countries worldwide. It started in England in 1867 when Josiah Spiers
started 'Special Services' for children in Islington, London. It was a
completely new approach to work with children and quickly grew into the Children's Special Service Mission.
On April 1st, 1879, the CSSM was persuaded by a Sunday School Teacher,
Annie Marston, to publish a card of daily Bible readings for children.
In 1880, the first cards reached New Zealand and the first members of
the Scripture Union were enrolled.
In 1930, the first CSSM beach mission was held at Brown's Bay in Auckland.
The work of Scripture Union was led for the next 14 years (until the end
of the second world war) by the famous Dr. John Laird. He built Crusader
Unions throughout New Zealand's High Schools and developed the beach missions
and camping programmes extensively.
Scripture Union opened a chain of Bookshops which it ran until 1995 when
they were sold. The three organisations, Crusaders, CSSM and Scripture
Union were later all united under the Scripture Union name.
Scripture Union currently has offices in Auckland, Wellington (National
Office) and Invercargill. For more information, go to our Contact
