Get Real is a programme designed to help young people deal with real life issues in their lives. Based on the 12 Step Model of Recovery that has helped people across the world, it deals with these real problems in a real way.

AIMS:

  • Dealing with life issues
  • A place young people can talk and be listened too
  • Safe place with a sense of belonging
  • Learning trust, respect and honesty
  • Non-threatening and non-judgmental
  • Meets young people where they are at

Get Real is not counseling therapy but it can create links with community organisations that will help develop positive changes being made by a young person.

Scripture Union currently runs Get Real in Aranui, Christchurch. Young people meet regularly with a facilitator at the Depot, formerly a shop, near Aranui High School. Using the twelve steps, they talk about issues they face and discuss how to deal with them better.

The programme is offered free of charge to schools, youth groups and community organisations. The programme also includes adventure camps with activities like canoeing, climbing and hunting.

12 Steps of Get Real

  1. We know that life is difficult at times, but there are some things we can change and there are some things we can't.
  2. We agree to listen to others as they share with us.
  3. We learn how to share honestly with others.
  4. We respect each other and don't gossip about what others have told us.
  5. We feel the support of others and learn that there is something bigger than ourselves that can help us change.
  6. We take an honest look at ourselves.
  7. We learn that we can talk about our problems to someone that we can trust and to God as we learn to know who God is.
  8. We learn that each day we can hand our lives and problems over to God to take care of.
  9. We become ready to let God help us change our lives.
  10. We accept our part in hurting others and become willing to say sorry.
  11. We try to understand what God wants for us and we ask for His help to live that out.
  12. We work on these steps daily and finding that our lives have changed, we want to share what we have learned with others.
