Gen Douglas MacArthur’s 1942 vow to the embattled people of the Philippines was fulfilled in 1944. Fortunately we’re not in a war zone, but we’re delighted that Paul Dadd, our UK intern has vowed to return – not in two years, but in three months – in January 2009 … and as a member of staff!
Two years ago Paul went to an ALPHA course and became a Christian. A trained teacher, he developed an interest in children’s ministry, and came here to serve voluntarily with us. Now we’re building a team of people to pray for him and donate money so he can work full-time in this important job.
I said we’re not in a war zone – and yet in a spiritual sense we are. Thousands of children in this country, once called Godzone, don’t know that there’s a God who loves them and who sent Jesus to be their friend and companion and give them eternal life.
In New Zealand, state schools are secular, but approved volunteers can give Christian instruction if the school committee gives permission. Many schools have half an hour a week for this in class time, but this door has closed in some places.
Paul will work to change this - spending time directly with children (in clubs, camps and holiday programmes), and more importantly helping churches develop effective ministries for children in local schools.
General MacArthur couldn’t liberate the Philippines single-handed, and Paul can’t minister to and for children without forces to back him up. Please contact Sylvia for a response form or donate here and join forces with Paul!
Scripture Union in New Zealand is part of a wider International Scripture Union movement, now present in over 120 countries around the world. The lamp and flame symbols represent our commitment to God's Word reflected in Psalm 119 v 105: Your Word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.
