HELPING YOU GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES IN YOUR SCHOOL

I still remember arriving at Bridge Valley Christian Ranch on the opening night of the first ever Fuel Conference (2004). I walked into the room and discovered I knew absolutely no one except the three others from my youth group that I'd come with - only then to be seperated from them as we were split into small groups! Growing up in a Christian family and living in Nelson my whole life, I knew a lot of other Christians in the area and had been to a lot of camps - but Fuel '04 succeeded in taking me somewhere I'd never been before. By the end of the conference I had made a lot of new friends and learnt a lot of leadership skills, and now had a support group around me so I could start making a real difference for Christ in my high school.

Before 2004 was over, my friends and I had started a new Christian group at Nelson College for Girls, a venture I never would have dared to embark on if it hadn't been for the support and encouragment of Milo and our Fuel group. Two and a half years later , our school group 'Infinity' is still going strong, as I write this I am preparing to attend our leadership meeting tomorrow, to help launch the new leaders for 2007.

Fuel has not only been about individuals leading in their school, but also about uniting student leaders from various schools in the region. At our meetings we discuss how each of our school groups is going, encourage and support each other, hear from guest speakers and eat lots of good food (thanks Milo)! Together we have planned and carried out two Church Picnics, uniting churches from all over the Nelson area. We all learnt so much in attempting to plan an event as a team, and spent excessive amounts of time discussing bouncy castles and debating how many sausages we'd need for the barbeque.

Being a part of Fuel has provided so many great opportunites - together leading a workshop at Spring Camp 2005 (which inspired a Christian group in Tapawera), having access to great guest speakers for our school groups (like Chris Grantham, World Vision church liaison and author of The Kiwi Bible), and getting the opportunity to design publicity material for the picnic and some of the Fuel Conferences.

Now as I head off to university to study Graphic Design, I will gladly take all my Fuel leadership and teamwork experiences and advice with me to my new environment. My past three years of involvement in Fuel have been an experience that I'm so grateful for. I started out as a normal 5th former, not aware of the potential around me, and especially not expecting that I had the ability to do anything significant. I've ended up a 7th form graduate with much confidence gained in myself and my ability to lead, and so many valuable experiences and pieces of advice to learn from.
